Belgium: Muslim Executive hopes for Islam lessons in Catholic education

The Muslim Executive of Belgium (EMB) hopes that the new Belgian archbishop will reopen that debate about offering Islam lessons in the Catholic education system.

On behalf of the Belgian Muslim community, the Executive congratulated the new archbishop in a press release Saturday.  [Outgoing] Cardinal Danneels was also thanks for his 'many years of efforts for social and religious cohesion in our country'.

The executive hopes to continue the inter-religious dialog with the new Cardinal.  At the same time, the representative body of Belgian Muslims hopes that the cardinal will reopen the "Islamic classes in Catholic education' file and will seek a solution in consultation with the Muslim community.

According to the media, the Bishop of Namur, André-Mutien Léonard would be the new archbishop of Belgium (Mechelen-Brussels,).  The Vatican has yet to officially confirm the appointment, which will take place at the beginning of the week.
