Sweden: Rejected asylum seekers could apply for residence permits

"it negates the tradition of granting asylum for those fleeing from political persecution at home. "

-----------

A controversial Swedish law is now in effect – giving rejected asylum seekers here a new chance to apply for residence permits if they have been working for the last 6 months and have a job guarantee for another year.

Some asylum seekers claim that this is their only chance to legalize their status and avoid being sent back to their home lands, and immigration authorities maintain that a large number of applicants are coming in.

But some critics insist the new law gives the employer absolute power over the refugee - and that it negates the tradition of granting asylum for those fleeing from political persecution at home.
